Wonderful Wellies

Originally produced for Shoe Fanatic and published here.

Long gone are April showers, but with Autumn well in session and Winter on the horizon, wellies are once again essential footwear (if you want dry feet that is). Perfect for cosy toes on Bonfire Night, crunching through piles of crispy leaves without ruining your shoes, or splash-proof frolicking through all manners of precipitation, from puddles to snow drifts, wellingtons may be the most useful boots going. Although the traditional green is back in style, you don’t have to stick to the usual; pretty patents, bright paint box hues and patterns are now available; here’s a few of our favourites:

Hunter have made a name for themselves in informed fashion circles as the creators and suppliers of ‘outstanding’ wellington boots. With over 300 styles available, they offer a range of patent pumps, ‘shorts’, haute couture ‘regencies’ and original glossy boots in every colour possible. You’ll have no problem matching these to your outfit.

One of the major trends for this season, Leopard print is available in almost every form, from footwear to jumpers. These spotted wellies were a favourite for festival season, teamed with vests and hotpants. While it may not be quite warm enough for thigh-skimming shorts, that doesn’t mean that you won’t look fabulously fashionable for Fall. Add skinny black jeans and a fur coat for WAG appeal, or go for school-girl-chic with woolly tights and a black kilt.

Ok, so technically these would normally languish in some fashionably-lit corner of the Men’s section in Hugo Boss, but I think they can appeal to both sexes. Chelsea boots are another must-have this season and these beauties offer you the two-birds-one-stone situation: gorgeously glossy Chelsea boots AND dry feet, voila! Perfecto!

Any good fashionista know that the devil is in the detail; a little more sparkle, an extra accessory in a contrasting colour, or one less piece of jewellery and your ensemble can go from tacky to tremendous in the blink of a fluttery, false eyelash. Luckily wellies fall into the category of items that you can, if you so choose, style up or down to suit your sartorial needs. Retailers from ASOS to River Island stock a range of comfy socks, fur toppers and knitted cuffs to take your wellies from wet to wonderful, stock up before they sell-out.
